Nairobi's Waldorf Schools:In the early twentieth century, Steiner built an educational philosophy, which looks beyond a narrow focus on academic ability and performance, embracing the need to also nurture a child's inherent character, intellect and social capacities in developing a balanced sense of self, and establishing a foundation of wholeness for young people to face and effectively manage the myriad of multi-faceted life challenges in today's global society. Steiner created a cooperative education model, which at playgroup and kindergarten level draws on a child's innate impulse to imitate and play to achieve education milestones, such as the development of fine and gross motor skills. Primary school subjects are enlivened, imbued with imagination and filled with meaning to encourage a child's sense of joy from learning. Steiner secondary schools provide the optimal arena for the development of a pupil's faculties to think objectively exploring contrasting views of the world in their quest for truth. The Waldorf-Astoria cigarette company founded the first Steiner school in Stuttgart, Germany in 1919 for the benefit of their factory employees. His educational methods have since been proven on all five continents and there are now over 2,500 schools and kindergartens worldwide. Increasingly, many governments and established educational institutions now recognise the value of the Steiner education fundamentals and are dismantling over competitive education systems, which can limit a child's creativity, enthusiasm for learning and broader intellectual development. Nairobi Waldorf Schools are a key part of the growth of Waldorf Steiner education in Kenya and East Africa, building a unique multi-cultural, interdenominational education platform, which reflects the diversity of our parent body, and our cultural and natural environment. Our teaching methods and community emphasis foster a sense of inner-security, social responsibility and emotional maturity from a young age, allowing Waldorf pupils to excel academically and socially, while nourishing other qualities such as initiative, motivation, persistence, and the full breadth of their individual gifts and talents. |
