HISTORYFollowing the establishment of the Nairobi Waldorf Trust in December 1999, the Waldorf Kindergarten (in Kileleshwa, Nairobi ) and associated groups have expanded well beyond their original parameters. At the time of the Trust formally taking on the management of the Kindergarten, there were approximately 24 children in our care. In September 2000 the primary group was formalised, making a total of 44 children in all. In January 2001 two new children entered the primary school and another playgroup/kindergarten started at the primary school location in Karen (near Nairobi ) with 10 children. In September 2002 the total number of children in the school was 30 in the Kileleshwa Kindergarten, 18 in the Karen kindergarten and 35 in the primary school in Karen, bringing the total up to 83 children. The initiative kept growing and we can now count over 100 children in our care. These children represent a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds. |
THE GROUPTo set up the school has been at times a daunting prospect in terms of logistics, planning and finances. However, thanks to the ongoing commitment, enthusiasm and hard work from our core group of teachers and parents, our efforts seem to be bearing fruit. Currently we are a body of 14 teachers who work together with the parents for the well being of the children. Our groups and structures have been formed based on the guidelines laid out by the Federation of Waldorf Schools in South Africa. All members attend regular meetings for faculty decisions, logistics and planning respectively. Hilke Mayntz (Germany), Troels Ussing (Denmark) and Peter Van Alphen and Eddie Dawes (South Africa) are ongoing mentors to this process. We are also fortunate to receive guidance from Hans Georg Krauch, Joan Almon, Cornelius Pietzner and other experienced people in the Waldorf movement worldwide. |
