Daily Rhythm in the Playgroup Class
Age 2 to 3 1/2 years old

When the child comes to the playgroup he/she is warmly welcomed by the teacher. All through the playgroup the teacher is a role model since it is through imitation the young children learn. At first most of the children do not let their parents go, some are shy, some just want to sit and watch from a far but after a week or so the child then slowly joins the other children in play.

Inside the classroom we have simple natural materials such as all the toys, trains, cars are made of wood and knitted soft dolls or animals which are stuffed with wool. The children’s play is varied and some want to play cooking, dressing up, want to become mothers and fathers; they play doctor and baby thus everything a child sees from outside they bring it out as play.

The Nairobi Waldorf School is a natural place for children to learn.

Singing in the playgroup plays an important role because children like to sing and be sung to. Simple songs such as Baa Baa Black Sheep, Miss Poly had a Dolly etc are sung repeatedly again and again to help the children learn the words. They are also told short and simple stories, verses and rhymes since at this age the child’s concentration is short span.

There are various activities that the children do on a weekly basis, such as:

      • The children do painting, drawing and modeling with soft play dough
      • They love helping the teachers with fruit cutting, cleaning and any work the teacher is doing.
      • Watering the flowers in the garden and feeding the pets which we have in the school.

All this is done with the help of a rhythm created by the teacher in the class on a daily, weekly, monthly and even yearly rhythm.
